My Favourite 2014 Concert Black & White Photos

Sam Roberts

Photo was taken at the Jubilee Auditorium. Was a challenging shoot in that there is no pit, and your are shooting from the crowd. I had switched lenses to a 70-200 f/2.8 and managed to wedge myself in between the corner of the stage and the side wall. Enough to get over everyone's heads!

Craic the Lens

This was my second shoot of the year at Canon Image Square studio. I decided to shoot with a manual fisheye lens, and see what I could come up with. Both the band and Canon loved this image. For that reason I felt my little risk was a success.

The Headstones

Hugh Dillon is a madman, which in turn that makes him a hell of a showman, and fun to shoot. In your face and awesome!

Gloryhound

I will be the first to admit, that I had no idea who Gloryhound was when I first saw them opening for The Headstones. They did catch my attention. This Scotia based band is tons of fun, and hard woking.

Head of the Heard

This Vancouver based band has a great style that to that speaks to Black & White.

Altbilly Jam

Located in the heart of Forest Lawn the Altbilly Jam always has a band with an upright bass. 

Alkatine

What do you get when you mix alcohol and nicotine, you get a kick ass Calgary rock band with a metal edge. 

Glass Tiger

It had been so long since I had heard Alan Frew talk that I forgot he was Scottish. Now being a huge Rangers fan, I love this picture for the 'RFC' tattoo that Frew has on his arm. Brings me back to Scotland when I was young. The photo speaks to me, and why it is one of my favourites.

The Headstones

The Headstones is one of the bands that didn't restrict my shooting the first three songs. This gave me the opportunity to go all over the place in Flames Central. The staff and security there have been awesome. An empty balcony allowed me to get above the crowd for this shot with the 70-200mm f/2.8

It is hard to believe how fast the year has gone. At times it has been completely mad, but I wouldn't change a thing. Photography wise it has been great, filling my schedule with some fantastic artists week after week.

I have to thank all the artists that have allowed me to photograph them throughout the past year, Jamie Taylor from Concert Addicts as well as the contributors, Brian Vollmer of Helix and Sam Reid of Glass Tiger. I would also like to thank the staff and security at all the venues Flames Central, Saddledome, Deerfoot Casino, MacEwan Hall, Grey Eagle, and the Jubilee Auditorium. You all make this possible.

Finally I would like to thank all my clients for your creative projects, and choosing me as your photographer.

Calgary Tattoo & Arts Festival

Calgary Tattoo & Arts Festival is this upcoming weekend, and as always I will be attending, It's a time for me to see some old friends as well as see some fabulous artists do what they do best. The photo above is of my beautiful wife being tattooed by the talented Bj Betts, from two years ago. The photo was taken with my Olympus Pen Micro Four-thirds camera, which I usually take with me when I am looking to travel light.
